NAKUMATT enters Uganda

Kenya-based Nakumatt has opened its first store in Uganda, its second foreign market after entering Rwanda in August 2008. The 7,000 square metre hypermarket offers 50,000 food and non-food items is described by the retailer as the "most modern retail outlet in Uganda" and is in the capital city Kampala.

It is open 24 hours a day and trades under the newly-created Nakumatt Oasis banner, employing around 200 staff. Shoppers can benefit from the Nakumatt Smart Card loyalty scheme. An adjacent shopping gallery at the Oasis complex houses several bank branches, restaurants, pharmacies and cinemas. Speaking at the inauguration event, Nakumatt COO Thiagarajan Ramamurthy said: "The opening of the new trend setting outlet is in line with the firm's regional expansion plans", adding that the retailer was actively preparing to enter Tanzania. By the end of 2010, Nakumatt plans to operate 40 outlets, including 30 in Kenya, four in Tanzania, three in Uganda and three in Rwanda.
