Wal-Mart Costa Rica has implemented a traceability initiative for its meat ranges, enabling the retailer to track all products from slaughter to shelf.
Due to high demand and the importance of meat in the Costa Rican diet, Wal-Mart Costa Rica, with Integrated Meat Industries, has launched a traceability database that enables the retailer to monitor the whereabouts and transit of meat products in the case of an urgent situation that may require corrective measures. In addition to that control, the system enables the provision of information such as the type of cut, date of production, date of packing, lot number, and ingredients (in the case of prepared meats). Rónald Vargas, General manager of Integrated Meat Industries, said that "the processing of meat must be rigorously be controlled with the objective of offering to clients a quality product at reasonable prices". All meat that is offered in Wal-Mart's Hipermás, Maxi Bodega, Pali and Mas-x-menos chains is subject to the traceability programme.
