Philippines: Policies at the root of NFA problems, says Yap

MANILA, Philippines -- Wrong policies, not structure, are the root of the problems of the cash-strapped the National Food Authority (NFA) that have resulted in accumulating losses over the past years, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said.

Yap said he had been telling economic managers that "the most important reform you can do to NFA is to revisit its mandate more than the structure."

The NFA is mandated to ensure food security in times and places of emergency or natural calamity, as well as stabilize supplies and prices of grains at farm-gate and consumer levels.
