Philippines: Vegetable trucks secure food lane, says industry leaders

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- The transport of vegetables from the Cordillera's biggest trading post here to major markets in Metro Manila and Southern Luzon has helped sustain the government's food-security program, industry leaders said here Thursday.
They said the daily travel of vegetable trucks has created a food lane that has inspired the opening of vegetable markets in other provinces supplying vegetables.
Benito Hipolito, president of the Benguet Traders and Truckers Association (BTTA), cited as example the opening of bagsakan areas (drop-off points) in Villlasis town and Urdaneta City, both in Pangasinan.
These local markets have expanded the market source of vegetables, he said.
