Reliance Retail (RRL) is planning to set up 200 wholesale (cash & carry) stores by March to sell fresh farm produce to pushcart vendors, small shopkeepers and hawkers. At present, the company operates such stores in Hyderabad, Jaipur and Punjab under the Ranger's Farm banner. Until recently these stores have been used as feeder links to the company's retail outlets including Reliance Fresh. RRL is now aiming at using these stores to supply small retailers and to open up new stores in New Delhi and other regions across the country by next month.

The company is looking at opening 50 stores in three months and to expand the number to 200 across the country by March 2009. These stores occupy an average of 186 square metres offering fresh produce directly sourced from farmers. An internal unit of RRL, called Reliance Agri Produce Distribution headed by Sanjeev Asthana, will spearhead the wholesale initiative. Additionally, Reliance Fresh stores are operated by a separate unit headed by Gunender Kapur.
