May 16, 2007 I GMO helps in the combat against global warming?

Genetic modification is amongst the most fiercely debated issues in the agriculture. Supporters say that they hold especial benefits for the developing world, where agricultural conditions are harsh and unstable. We do not have to emphasize its advantages on world food supply.
Consumers, however, especially in Europe, remain resistant to genetic modification - despite regulatory approvals opening the door to imports of GM crops.  Arguments against GM include fears over human health and ecological unbalance (monoculture), and mistrust of biotech giants who have already made fortunes on their technology.
It is a fact, however, that global warming destroys more and more agricultural land and organisms. Pests never seen before become usual ones, while the growing number of chemicals damages the environment. GMOs can be a solution to global warming as they help to increase yields while making the plant become as resistant as possible to external effects.
All in all, gene technology in agriculture can be either a magic wand that will solve all the problems of agriculture, or as a disaster that will see the end of the world. Gene technology is a powerful new tool in plant breeding and if wisely used, it can increase the efficiency and sustainability of our agriculture.
