According to reports in the Polish press, citing the director of Carrefour's local operation, Alain Souillard, the retailer is to launch a franchised convenience store format in the country. The company is initially to develop 20-40 stores by the end of 2008 with an area of between 80 square metres and 500 square metres under the '5 minutes' banner.
According to Mr Souillard, 'It's a way for us to expand more quickly, without investing a lot of money.' Carrefour officials added that the recently launched Carrefour Express banner, which comprises supermarkets of 500 square metres to 2,000 square metres, will also be operated on a franchise basis in Poland.
The company plans to open three supermarkets by the end of the year to have to have 74 and to open ten more in 2008.
