ILRI Market Opportunities research theme
January 11, 2007 |
One of the ways that the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to improve the contribution that livestock make to the livelihoods of the poor is by improving market opportunities for poor livestock keepers. In line with this, the Market Opportunities research theme seeks to identify opportunities for the poor to benefit from increased consumer demand for livestock and livestock products, a trend known as ‘The Livestock Revolution'.
The theme has three key areas of focus or operating projects that span the livestock supply chain from production, distribution to sale in local, regional and export markets. Each operating project comprises several time-bound research activities that target a common output.
1. Smallholder competitiveness in changing markets
Identify, test and adapt technical, institutional and policy options that will enable smallholder livestock producers to remain competitive in the face of changing market requirements and increased competition from imports.
2. Changing demand and market institutions
Understand better the changing nature of demand for livestock products in the developing world in terms of quality, safety and convenience, and thus identify appropriate market institutions that will allow smallholders to access markets for livestock inputs and outputs that meet consumer needs.
3. Animal health and food safety for trade
