Productive Strategies and Empowerment of Poor Rural Families to Participate Successfully in Global Markets (ODI/IDRC)

December 31, 2006 |

Project  coordinated by Overseas Development Institute

All signatories to the Millennium Development Goals are legally committed to undertaking the necessary actions to halve 1990 levels of extreme poverty by 2015. Given that most of the poor are located in rural areas, there is a need to develop pro-poor strategies appropriate to the rural context if this target is to be met. This grant will support a scoping study based on the hypothesis that poor rural households have the potential, under specific circumstances, to benefit from participation in global markets. Researchers will establish a common platform for comparative analysis, undertake country-level investigations in Bolivia, Egypt, Honduras, India, Sénégal, Uganda and Viet Nam, and consolidate and disseminate the findings. The study is expected to result in a research agenda for IDRC's Rural Poverty and Environment (RPE) program initiative on the theme of productive strategies and empowerment of poor rural families to participate successfully in global markets.
