The Green Corner, logra éxito con productos orgánicos

‘Proactive fast-tracking’ diffusion of supermarkets in developing countries: implications for market institutions and trade

Thomas Reardon, Spencer Henson and Julio Berdegué

Abstract

Supermarkets have spread extremely rapidly in developing countries after the ‘take-off' in the early to mid-1990s. Former analyses of supermarket diffusion have not adequately explained the sudden burst and then exponential diffusion of supermarkets in the late 1990s and early 2000s. We argue that rather than taking demand and market institutional and organizational conditions as ‘exogenous', as former analyses have tended to do, modern food retailers instead have treated local conditions as substantially ‘endogenous'. To enable their rapid growth, supermarkets undertake ‘proactive fast-tracking strategies' to alter the ‘enabling conditions' of entry and growth.

Food industry looks to greener future

And by the same token, as food manufacturers and retailers tailor their strategies in response to greater environmental awareness, how much effect are green issues really having on mainstream food buying habits?

US: Wal-Mart investigates "green" attitudes

US retail giant Wal-Mart has launched an initiative to monitor the shopping habits of its customers.

Initially focusing on environmental issues, the 'live better index' has found that while US consumers are more concerned about the environment, cost and convenience are the greatest barriers to greener shopping habits.

Agricultural development for poverty reduction – some options in support of public policy interventions

Julio A. Berdegué and Helle Munk Ravnborg. April 2007

Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS

A renewed focus on agriculture is emerging among donor organizations. In 2005, The World Bank published its report Agricultural Growth for the Poor. An Agenda for Development and Dfid published a policy paper entitled Growth and poverty reduction: the role of agriculture, and soon, the World Development Report 2008 entitled Agriculture for Development will be published. The key concern driving this renewed focus is the wish to increase the contribution of agriculture and agricultural growth to poverty reduction. This DIIS brief provides a short introduction to the main messages of the above documents and proposes five main elements of a strategy for supporting public policy interventions in favour of pro-poor agricultural growth.
